Solemn Vale – A Folk Horror Roleplaying Game Live on Kickstarter
Los Angeles, C.A. – Solemn Vale, the latest game from the minds at Dirty Vortex launches on Kickstarter today!
Solemn Vale is a Folk Horror tabletop roleplaying game. Set in the quiet English town of Solemn Vale in the late 1970s, your characters will become entwined in horrific folk tales, and must use all of their wits to escape with their lives—and their souls.
What is Solemn Vale?
A narrative-driven storytelling game set against the backdrop of 1970s England, Solemn Vale explores an abhorrent world of Folk Horror and the Supernatural. Each game is a communal storytelling experience, with two or more Players taking on the roles of visitors or inquisitive residents whose eyes have been opened to a festering evil, ensnared in a tale of mystery and survival.
Brainchild of Creative Director and artist Mark Kelly (Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition, Chronicles of Darkness), he describes Solemn Vale as: “a state of mind, twisted and macabre, laced with dread and paranoia, and occasionally tinged with dark humour.”
Solemn Vale is a game where the shadows run deep and the woods cling to something earthly and ancient that the rest of the world has forgotten—but the residents of Solemn Vale remember.
Solemn Vale has many contributors, including industry veterans such as Developer, Matthew Dawkins (Vampire: The Masquerade, Chronicles of Darkness), and writers Ashley Perryman (In Nomine, Transhuman), Hilary Sklar (Kult: Divinity Lost, Dune), and many more.
System Mechanics
The Wyrd Abacus underpins the stories told in Solemn Vale’s nexus of the weird and the horrible. This game system serves as the bones upon which Solemn Vale’s flesh is draped, facilitating the narrative of your own journey through the seething cauldron of both occult and entirely human nastiness that lies just beneath the village’s placid, bucolic veneer.
The Art of Folk Horror
Macabre, horrific, and alluring, Mark envisions Folk Horror through a completely unique lens. His artwork triggers the imagination, and fills any aspiring narrator with inspiration for their own stories of twisted horror.
Solemn Vale contains over 50 full-page gripping illustrations making Solemn Vale equal parts art book and rules manual.
Back It Today!
Solemn Vale is now on Kickstarter. The manuscript is already written, and the book is set to come in at approximately 320 full-colour pages in an easy-to-transport 6×9 format.
The game is available in PDF, softcover, and hardcover, as well as a strictly limited cloth-bound hardcover edition. Stretch goals include story modules written by Justin Achilli, Ken Hite, Danielle Lauzon, Richard Dansky, and a host of others!
There is also a range of add-on content designed to enhance the Solemn Vale experience, including rolling trays, miniatures, maps, dice, and character sheet pads.
